BIG SKY, Mont. — Big Sky Thrift is awarding Lone Peak Veterinary Hospital $150,000 to Riley’s Urgent Fund for Friends. This grant will be used to create a new veterinary hospital and animal shelter in the Big Sky Town Center, allowing for the expansion of services.
An animal shelter and 24/7 care will be offered at the new location.
“I feel like we have just such a need here to expand what we could do, and we have the resources with great grants like Thrift’s to make that happen,” said Dr. Syd Desmarias, the owner and a veterinarian at Lone Peak Veterinary Hospital. “So it was an idea of combining two forces to really do some good in the veterinary field for animals in need.”
Desmarias applied for the grant, sharing her vision through both a regular application and a presentation to the Thrift committee.
“Big Sky Thrift is so happy to support Dr. Syd,” commented Emily Burke, associate director of Big Sky Thrift. “Her creativity in this whole project model to think to include housing on top for her staff -- this was a main reason that the Thrift committee chose to grant to her. Because she just had all of this so figured out.”
Big Sky Thrift said choosing Desmarias was a no-brainer, given both commercial and nonprofit aspects were carefully considered.
This is their third year giving grants to causes in the Big Sky community, but Lone Peak Veterinary Hospital received their first large grant.
Groundbreaking is currently set to take place in March.
